About Us

Bushfire Prone Planning was founded in 2013 by Mike Scott and Kathy Nastov with a clear goal: to raise the standard of bushfire risk management in Australia by combining deep technical expertise with practical, on the ground perspective. What began in Western Australia as a small consultancy focused on BAL assessments and bushfire management planning has grown into Australia’s leading specialist bushfire consultancy.

Director Mike Scott brings extensive expertise in bushfire operations and fire behaviour, combined with specialised experience in land management and strategic advisory roles at all levels of government. His practical, field based approach has shaped our reputation for delivering solutions that are not only technically sound but successfully applied.

Director Kathy Nastov is a nationally respected bushfire specialist who brings a rare combination of environmental and bushfire planning expertise, operational and emergency response experience, and strong leadership. Her ability to balance environmental values with bushfire resilience outcomes underpins the clarity, credibility, and trust that clients associate with our work.

In 2025, Joshua Bull joined the leadership team as a Director. Josh adds further strength to our operational capacity, with hands-on expertise in prescribed burning, land management, and delivering effective bushfire outcomes across complex landscapes and projects.

Together, our leadership team drives a multi-disciplinary approach that spans bushfire planning, policy, bushfire risk assessment, prescribed burning, and risk treatment. Our team includes BPAD Level 1, 2, and 3 accredited practitioners, many with professional backgrounds in firefighting, land management, environmental science and government.

Today, we are the largest dedicated bushfire consultancy in operating in Western Australia and Queensland, with national reach and the capability across all levels. Our leadership ensures Bushfire Prone Planning is not only equipped to manage today’s bushfire risk but to help shape how it is understood and managed into the future.
